For those of you who remember the Clinton years, this was the mantra. It worked then(fear), is it working now?
Mrs. Swaim and I were traveling, of course in the Buick, to a documentation seminar in sacramento this last weekend. (more about the seminar in another post) It is about 10 hours in the car and roadtrips without kids are the bomb. It at times felt like a "no starbucks left behind campaign." Every time we stopped we had to wait in line. Every time. We did the unthinkable and loaded up on in/out burger (none in idaho) again waiting in line at 3pm on a sunday afternoon. People everywhere. We spent the night in Reno at a huge hotel/casino ( having dinner with the delightful Sovinsky family ,more about that in another post.) 27 floors in this thing. " hey ", I said to the lady at the front desk, "how about an upgrade." "love to," she said, "Can't. EVERY ROOM IS FULL." 27 floors. Nice hotel. HMMM. I was beginning to see a pattern. Trader Joes? full. 20 min. wait at dinner, but we sat at the bar instead. Hmmm. What am I missing? I know people who are stuggling. Most notably the one who filed bankruptcy and still goes to the health food store to by vitamins for her pets. Not walmart, the health food store. The traffic was so bad in sacramento and the seminar venue was next to the california state fair. Another lifestyle essential, the state fair! People all over the place. Not standing in a soup kitchen line, GOING TO THE STATE FAIR! Ten dollar parking! Is it me?
Folks this little rant is meant to be helpful. As you decide about how to invest in your business, and your future, BRain spa and coaching with DCM trumps gambling and corn dogs! Keep your heads down tribesmen, dig in, invest, grow. It is way more fun!
Cheers
ks and Mrs. Swaim too.
It's the economy stupid!

Way to go Swaimer! I guess that goes to support the adage "People will pay for what they want, but not necessarily for what they need". Thanks for pointing out the fact that people are still out there spending money despite what you hear about from the media. As we sharpen our skills in the patient centered arena, we can create a safe haven for people in our communities to not only "need" our services, but "want" them as well. Combine that with them paying for our service and you complete the servant leader trifecta. Do they have airplanes in Idaho?

Great observations in multiple areas and socioeconomic levels. I'd be interested to know if it was all quantity of people, or lack of streamlined systems and purpose as well. This reminds me of how Dr. Sea told us to go to Best Buy, Walmart, and other stores without a wallet and just observe the crap that people are still buying. Kudos to you and Mrs. Swaim for having the awareness to learn while roadtripping. As you mentioned Dr. Rich, it should be our goal to make our businesses the model of what others strive for in our communities, and create the buzz that leads to "want".
Fyi, no way I would fly if I had the chance to hang with the Swaimer and Mrs. Swaim in the Buick; it's all in the details of the experience:)

On the radio this morning driving to the office, the announcer said that my state of Virginia has announced a budget surplus of $311 million! And the governor said that once the actually tally is in by August it may be closer to $400 million. Have I mentioned the noticeable increase in Ferrari's and Maserati's in my area recently. I lean towards the Maserati personally.
I know I live right next to Washington, DC and we would be the last to feel the pinch, since the government literally "makes" the money but the economy for the vast majority of the country has been more emotional than out of "The Grapes of Wrath". Our patients will use it as much as an excuse as we do. Where are we leading them is the real question.
