Attitude, Aptitude, Alignment

You need your employee’s emotional commitment if your business is to succeed.

By Dr. Frank Sovinsky

People problems are the number one frustration in business. More than money problems, or getting and keeping patients, the number one frustration in business is attracting, training, and leading your employees. One popular management myth is that “people are your most important asset.” This simply is not true.

The right people, doing the right things consistently and for the right reasons are your most important asset. A great leader earns the assets they attract by developing their core competencies.

In his book “The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork,” John Maxwell boldly states and we agree that:
The Wrong Person in the Wrong Place = Regression
The Wrong Person in the Right Place = Frustration
The Right Person in the Wrong Place = Confusion
The Right Person in the Right Place = Progression
The Right People in the Right Places = Multiplication

The DC Mentors Benchmarking system asks the question, “If the position could speak what would it say.” We know that certain behavioral needs will never be met in a Chiropractic office and the same is true for the hidden motivators or values. Therefore, the staff may give lip service to the mission and vision, but never enrolled.

Make no mistake, you need your employee™s emotional commitment if your business is to succeed. Oral commitments—agreeing to do the work—and physical agreements—showing up every work day—are not enough to get the kind of results you are looking for.

Keep in mind that if your people™s casual (personal) motivational needs are not being met, then the only way they can justify staying with you is to be motivated by incentive, “Oh yeah, she promised me a bonus and a raise.” Or fear, “If I continue to do whatever it is I’m doing at least I won™t be fired.”

By causal motivation we mean that each staff member has his/her personal cause, his/her personal interests, attitudes and values, that need to be met through the work that he/she does. Make no mistake about it, while we have a Code of Honor that agrees to Mission, Team and then the Individual, it is the individual that decides if he or she is truly enrolled or not. When the job satisfies his/her personal motivational needs s/he chooses to be enrolled in the vision and mission. When you have the right people give them the opportunity to enjoy a sense of community and an inspiring environment that only Lake Tahoe can provide. We look forward to seeing you there.
